EquineVision AI: Transforming Thoroughbred Traceability

Manual horse identification in high-traffic saleyards is slow, prone to error, and hazardous. Sparrofox built a real-time computer vision system that identifies individual thoroughbreds and tracks their movement automatically.

The Challenge

Thoroughbred saleyards are chaotic environments where hundreds of high-value animals move through narrow channels. Relying on manual clipboard tracking or microchip scanning requires humans to be in close proximity to stressed animals, creating safety risks and data bottlenecks.

The client needed a hands-off way to verify which horse was in which pen at any given moment, ensuring 100% accurate movement logs for biosecurity and sales compliance.

The requirement: "Identify the horse without touching it, and track it through the yard in real-time."

The Solution

📹 RTSP Edge Processing

  • • High-performance stream handling optimized from <1fps to 5fps+
  • • Raspberry Pi 5 edge nodes for local camera processing
  • • Robust reconnection logic for rural network environments
  • • Distributed architecture for multi-camera coverage

🧠 Computer Vision Pipeline

  • • YOLOv8/v10 models customized for equine detection
  • • Feature extraction for individual identification
  • • Movement tracking across overlapping camera fields
  • • Automated snapshot capture for audit trails

📱 Unified Management UI

  • • Real-time video dashboard with live AI overlays
  • • Historical movement logs with searchable horse IDs
  • • Automatic alerts for unauthorized movements
